Every autumn the search for "smart thermostat installation near me" spikes across Doncaster, and the first question is always the same: what does it actually cost to have one fitted properly? The honest answer is that the hardware is only about half of it. The rest is the labour, whether your boiler and wiring are compatible, and whether you want room-by-room control or just a single clever thermostat.
This guide gives you the fitted prices we charge in Doncaster in 2026 for the three systems people ask about most, tado° X, Hive and Google Nest, plus the things that push the price up or down. If you want the head-to-head comparison of the three, read our Hive vs Nest vs tado guide; this article is about the money.
Smart Thermostat Installation Cost in Doncaster: The Short Answer
For a standard single-zone combi boiler system, a professionally fitted smart thermostat in Doncaster costs £250 to £450 all in, including the hardware, labour, and getting it connected to your Wi-Fi and phone. That breaks down roughly as:
- tado° X starter kit (our usual recommendation): hardware £180–£240, labour £100–£150. Fitted: £280–£390. Add room-by-room control later at about £60 a radiator.
- Hive Thermostat Mini / Hive Active Heating: hardware £150–£200, labour £100–£150. Fitted: £250–£350.
- Google Nest Learning Thermostat: hardware £220–£280, labour £120–£170. Fitted: £340–£450.
Labour is usually 1.5 to 2.5 hours. We quote a fixed price before we start, so the figure you're given is the figure you pay.
What Pushes the Price Up
Room-by-room control. If you want smart radiator valves so each room runs its own schedule, add £55–£60 per valve installed. A typical three-bed semi in Doncaster needs four to six, so a full tado or Hive multi-zone system comes to £650–£900 fitted, allowing three to four hours on site.
Older boilers or wiring. Most boilers fitted in the last 15 years have a simple 230V call-for-heat connection that any of the three systems will work with. Some older or unusual boilers need a receiver wired differently, or a new cable run from the boiler to where the thermostat lives. That can add £40–£90 of labour. We tell you at the survey, not on the day.
Hot water control. If you have a system boiler with a hot water cylinder rather than a combi, you need the version of the kit that controls hot water as well as heating. Hive and tado both do this; it adds roughly £30–£60 to the hardware.
A boiler that can be turned down, not just on and off. Many modern boilers (lots of Ideal, Baxi and Worcester models) can be told to run gently rather than flat out. tado° X is particularly good at this, and it's where the real saving comes from. It costs nothing extra to set up, but it needs the right boiler and the right wiring, and we check both before we quote.
What Brings the Price Down
Fitting it with another job. If we're already at your house for a boiler service or a new boiler, the thermostat labour drops because the travel and set-up time is already covered. A tado° X added to a new boiler installation is typically £100–£150 less than fitting it on its own.
Supplying your own unit. If you've already bought a Hive or Nest, we'll fit it for the labour price alone. Just check it's the UK version and the right variant for your boiler type before you buy; we're happy to tell you which one.
Is It Worth It? The Realistic Saving
Manufacturers quote big percentage savings; the independent testing is more modest. For a typical Doncaster home on a £1,200 winter gas bill, a smart thermostat used properly saves £60 to £180 a year. Most of that comes from two things: not heating the house when nobody's in, and not overshooting the temperature you actually want. With room-by-room control the saving climbs to £150–£250 a year because you stop heating spare rooms.
So a £300 tado° X or Hive pays for itself in two to four winters. A £800 multi-zone system takes longer but makes a bigger dent on the monthly bill, which matters more if you work from home and the heating's on all day.
Why Have It Fitted by a Gas Safe Engineer
A smart thermostat is a heating control, and fitting one means working inside the boiler's wiring centre. That's live mains, and getting it wrong can leave the boiler running permanently, not at all, or trip the whole system. We're Gas Safe registered (638592) and fit these every week across Doncaster, so we know which boilers need which receiver and we set it up so the app works before we leave. We also show you how to use the schedule, because a smart thermostat left on the default settings saves almost nothing.
How to Get a Fixed Price
