Nobody plans an emergency plumber. You find out you need one at 6:40am when the boiler's dead and there's water tracking across the kitchen ceiling, or at half nine on a Sunday when the stopcock won't turn and the utility room is filling up. And in that moment the question you actually want answered — before you ring anyone — is a simple one: what is this going to cost me?
Most plumbers won't tell you on their website. You get "competitive rates" and "no call-out charge*" with an asterisk that leads nowhere. What "no call-out charge" actually means
It almost never means the visit is free. In practice it means one of three things: the call-out is rolled into a higher first-hour rate; it's waived only if you go ahead with the repair; or it's waived during normal working hours only, which is precisely when you didn't need an emergency plumber. Ask the direct question when you ring: "What will I pay if you come out and the job takes 45 minutes?" A straight answer to that tells you everything about who you're dealing with.
Is It Actually an Emergency? An Honest Triage List
We'd rather you called us on Monday and paid £95 than called us on Sunday night and paid £180 for something that could have waited. So here's the split, plainly.
Call immediately — this is a real emergency
- You can smell gas. Don't ring a plumber first. Ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, open the windows, turn the gas off at the meter, don't touch light switches. That call is free and they attend 24/7. Ring us afterwards for the repair.
- Water you can't stop. A burst pipe, a failed flexible tap connector, a cylinder leaking. If the stopcock won't hold it, that's water damage accumulating by the minute.
- Water anywhere near electrics. A ceiling leak over a light fitting or consumer unit. Isolate the circuit if you safely can, and call.
- No heating or hot water with a vulnerable person in the house — elderly, very young, or anyone unwell — especially once the nights turn cold.
- Sewage backing up into a bath, shower or downstairs toilet. That's a health issue, not an inconvenience.
- Carbon monoxide alarm sounding. Everyone out, gas off, 0800 111 999.
Uncomfortable, but it can wait until morning
- A dripping tap or a slow drip you can catch in a bucket.
- One radiator cold when the rest of the house is warm.
- A running toilet — lift the cistern lid and prop the float valve up, and it'll hold overnight.
- Low boiler pressure with no visible leak. Repressurise using the filling loop and see if it holds.
- A slow-draining sink or bath with no smell and no backing up.
- No hot water but the heating still works — that's usually a diverter valve, and it's a booked job, not a 1am job.
Every one of those is a normal-rate visit if you leave it a few hours. That's the difference between £95 and £180 for the same forty minutes of work.
Four Things To Do Before the Plumber Arrives
What you do in the first five minutes usually matters more than how fast anyone can drive to you.
1. Find your stopcock — ideally before you ever need it
In most Doncaster housing it's under the kitchen sink. In the older terraces around Hexthorpe, Balby and Wheatley it can be in the cellar head or under the stairs; in the newer estates at Rossington, Auckley and Edenthorpe it's often in the utility or the downstairs cloakroom. Turn it clockwise to close. Go and find yours this week and turn it a quarter-turn — a stopcock that hasn't moved in fifteen years is a stopcock that will seize on the night you need it.
2. Drain the system down

- A real local number and a real address. National "emergency plumber" call-centre sites take your job and sell it on to whoever's nearest — you have no idea who turns up or what they charge.
- A price before work starts. Not an exact quote, which is impossible before diagnosis, but a clear rate and a clear call-out. Anyone who won't say is planning to decide the price after they've seen how worried you are.
